Courtney Sierra Rose

Hi, there! We're Courtney and Austin Rose. We are rewards-based Professional Dog Trainers in the Bristol, VA/TN area. We use science to guide our understanding of how dogs function in the modern world. We do not use force, intimidation, pain, threats or coercion. This means that we do not use aversive methods (such as prong collars, e-collars, citronella, leash corrections, etc.) in our training protocols, but instead use a force free approach to training. We believe that all dogs have the right to exist in their natural states of mind and behavior. And we believe that dogs are not robots for humans to program, but rather canine partners with their own thoughts, feelings and desires and training should reflect this truth. We don't believe that there are “bad dogs”, but rather some dogs that lack the framework for how to exist in our homes and society. We are committed to the highest standards of the industry and strive to work toward those with each client. We also believe that it is important to be transparent and honest with our clients when discussing behavior modification for each client’s individual needs. We are committed to continuing to learn as reliable information is presented to the industry and to accommodate our methods as ethically as we can.

PuppyPreKThere are critical windows of time in a puppy’s development that can set him or her up to be a confident, stable, happy and human/dog friendly canine citizen. At Friendsville® Animal Center that window of time is where we focus our training. Different from basic training (which is also important), the PuppyPreK curriculum focuses exclusively on socialization with multiple humans and dogs; exposure to cats; playing on different textures, terrains, surfaces, water and sounds; and, gaining balance in our sensory enrichment yards which includes stairs, tunnels, platforms, spindles, A-frames and tug toys. The 6-session program is open to healthy puppies 8-16* weeks old who have had at least one round of vaccinations, are dewormed and have some sort of identification tag/microchip. We believe the advantages of socializing young puppies far outweighs potential risks prior to the full vaccination schedule. (*Trainer approval required for older puppies.)

Frequently asked questions about dog training

How much does dog training cost?

Dog training costs vary by type and location. Group classes typically run $50–$200 for a multi-week session. Private sessions range from $50–$150 per hour. Board and train programs can cost $500–$2,500+ per week depending on the trainer and length of program.

What dog training methods are most effective?

Positive reinforcement is widely considered the most effective and humane dog training method. It rewards desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones. Look for trainers certified by organizations like CCPDT, IAABC, or Karen Pryor Academy.

How long does dog training take?

Basic obedience typically takes 4–8 weeks of consistent training. Behavior modification for issues like aggression or separation anxiety may take 3–6 months. Every dog learns at their own pace — consistency and practice between sessions are key.

What certifications should a dog trainer have?

Look for trainers certified by CCPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer), IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), or the Karen Pryor Academy. These certifications require demonstrated knowledge and adherence to humane training standards.
