Abigail Ashley Leland
Abby Leland is a USAR Canine Trainer at the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation in Santa Paula, California. Here she trains dogs with the end goal of achieving FEMA certification with a handler. In preparation for certification, Abby trains dogs in agility, direction control, off leash obedience, and urban search and rescue. By the end of their training, the dogs she works with are able to successfully complete each of the elements in the Foundational Skills Assessment (FSA). In addition to training dogs, she also trains handlers to work with these amazing dogs and supports them during their certification process. Abby loves that she gets to work with dogs who are as passionate about their job as she is about hers.

My business motto is: 'Every dog is a project'My background is steep in program and project management with an emphasis on risk analysis.Over the past 18 years, I have been a dog handler, first as a volunteer and then as a full-time employee with the ASPCA. I can help you train your puppy to become a responsive adult dog and can also advise you if you have recently adopted a shelter dog. Shelter dogs have been through a lot. The dog you see in the shelter may not be the dog you bring into your home. I can help you understand how to communicate with your new family member and can help your new rescue dog transition to your environment.

Welcome to Tail Wags Training! A business I created that focuses on what I'm most passionate about, animals and those who share that with me. My main focus is Dog Training. But I also branch out with Dog Walking, occasional Pet Sitting, Dog Bathing, Drug Administration, and some Animal Photography. I'm a fully insured LLC with the State of Florida. My background includes becoming a Certified Professional Dog Trainer under the Council of Certified Professional Dog Trainers program for North America, a Certificate in Training Shelter Dogs from Animal Behavior College, a Certification as a Canine Enrichment Technician at DogNostics, an AS in business administration, and I have studied in many fields at Penn Foster University under the Certified Veterinarian Technician program, I worked with amazing veterinarians as the supervisor and lead surgery/anesthesia technician at an animal hospital, I have volunteered at Manatee County Animal Services of Palmetto, and have worked in this field in some manner for over a decade. So your pets will be in safe hands with me and I look forward to meeting you and your pet(s).

Frequently asked questions about dog training
How much does dog training cost?
Dog training costs vary by type and location. Group classes typically run $50–$200 for a multi-week session. Private sessions range from $50–$150 per hour. Board and train programs can cost $500–$2,500+ per week depending on the trainer and length of program.
What dog training methods are most effective?
Positive reinforcement is widely considered the most effective and humane dog training method. It rewards desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones. Look for trainers certified by organizations like CCPDT, IAABC, or Karen Pryor Academy.
How long does dog training take?
Basic obedience typically takes 4–8 weeks of consistent training. Behavior modification for issues like aggression or separation anxiety may take 3–6 months. Every dog learns at their own pace — consistency and practice between sessions are key.
What certifications should a dog trainer have?
Look for trainers certified by CCPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer), IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), or the Karen Pryor Academy. These certifications require demonstrated knowledge and adherence to humane training standards.
