Soon after starting my journey I realized animal behavior was a strong passion of mine, and I enrolled in the Dog Training Internship Academy led by a world renowned Dog Trainer, Janis Bradley. My extensive education background has allowed me the opportunity to work with the Applied Animal Behavior and Welfare Lab at Virginia Tech, take on a key role as Behavior Supervisor at Asheville Humane Society, as part of the Behavior Team at Contra Costa Animal Services, as a Behavior Team member and Class Instructor with the East Bay SPCA, and alongside multiple other rescues including Woof Meow Rescue, Family Dog Rescue, and Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.

I volunteer at the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson AZ.I do general dog walking as well as working with the TopDogs Team to help the behaviorally challenged dogs. As a group we work with the problematic dogs, but more importantly we train other volunteers to train the shelter dogs, with the hopes of making the dogs more adoptable.I also work with adopters and fosters to help their newly adopted/fostered dogs acclimate to life in a home away from the shelter. This process can be challenging for some dogs as well as for the adopters/fosters.I have started a private Foundation to offer free training for dogs fostered or adopted from Pima Animal Care Center, our county shelter.

Frequently asked questions about dog training
How much does dog training cost?
Dog training costs vary by type and location. Group classes typically run $50–$200 for a multi-week session. Private sessions range from $50–$150 per hour. Board and train programs can cost $500–$2,500+ per week depending on the trainer and length of program.
What dog training methods are most effective?
Positive reinforcement is widely considered the most effective and humane dog training method. It rewards desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones. Look for trainers certified by organizations like CCPDT, IAABC, or Karen Pryor Academy.
How long does dog training take?
Basic obedience typically takes 4–8 weeks of consistent training. Behavior modification for issues like aggression or separation anxiety may take 3–6 months. Every dog learns at their own pace — consistency and practice between sessions are key.
What certifications should a dog trainer have?
Look for trainers certified by CCPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer), IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), or the Karen Pryor Academy. These certifications require demonstrated knowledge and adherence to humane training standards.
