Dogs are amazing! You might want a well-mannered companion, or perhaps your goal is a Service dog or to handle a Search and Rescue K9 hero. Whatever you envision with your dog, it always starts with training and love. (Dogs are easy to love. Owners can be hard to train.) Successful training happens when owners understand how dogs learn. (How to talk "dog".) Then, the dog learns to understand what his owner wants. When everyone speaks the same language, learning becomes fun... and faster and so much easier! I'm a firm believer that dogs prefer rewards to punishment, so I don't use aversive training methods. My goal is to enhance and advance the bond people share with their dogs. I never want a dog to associate pain with learning, a trainer or his owner. I love every stage of dog training, from socialization and puppy manners, to highly specialized working dogs. The moment a new dog first responds to a command is pure magic. We've just opened the door to communicating, understanding and learning together. I believe the bond we'll have with our dog begins with training. It might be teaching house rules to your new puppy. Or perhaps it's a Service Dog for a child on the autism spectrum. Maybe you andyour dog want to be a K9 Search and Rescue (K9 SAR) team and find missing people. Dogs provide a world of opportunities and possibilities...and most importantly...LOVE. Working with scent detection dogs is my passion. I've trained and handled SAR Dogs since 2002. We rescue and recover missing people on land and underwater, saving lives or bringing closure in emergencies or disasters. I've also taught dogs to alert on the scent of specific human cancers, detectable in urine samples, in several medical research studies. The dogs had astounding accuracy. When you realize the impact your dog can have on lives, it's pretty awe-inspiring. I've held the leash as my dog led me to missing children. I've watched as my dog searched a city demolished by a tornado, alerting when he detected the remains of a buried victim. I've been in a boat with my dog as he searched a river for a drowning victim, waiting for him to touch his nose to the water, indicating the search was over. Everything starts with training! It opens the door to understanding your Incredible, Amazing DOG!!

Donna’s formal work with dogs essentially began in the summer of 2002 as a volunteer at the ASPCA in New York City. In addition to volunteering she’d hoped to gain experience so that one day, lifestyle permitting, she’d be prepared to care for a dog of her own. At the time, Donna lived alone and was away from home most of the time, commuting back and forth to Manhattan where she worked as an Education Associate with the International Center of Photography. Come autumn, circumstances hadn’t changed much but for one thing: Donna had met and fallen in love with a three-year-old German Shepherd who’d arrived at the shelter as a humane law enforcement case after legal seizure from a neglectful and physically abusive owner. Donna took the dog home a short time later and named her Sammy. Always having wanted a Weimaraner, Donna would point to Sammy and fondly say, “I just don’t know what happened. She was supposed to be a Weimaraner.” But that’s how love is, unpredictable and on its own schedule. Donna returned to volunteer at the ASPCA a number of years later and was deployed to Kentucky with the Field and Investigation Team to work on one of the largest puppy mill raid cases to date. Donna was an active volunteer in the dog enrichment program for the Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown, NY, and worked at Pet Rescue in Harrison NY and The Humane Society of Westchester (HSW) in New Rochelle NY as a volunteer trainer in their ‘train to adopt’ program. In 2013, Donna completed an eighteen-month course of study with the Northeast Regional Dog Trainer’s Academy (NRDTA) run by Bobbie Bhambree, Founder & Director of DogCentric Training & Behavior and HSW’s former head trainer. Currently she volunteers 4-12 hours a week with CPR (Companion Pet Rescue) in Southbury, CT.At the Humane Society of Westchester, Donna often taught the ‘What Every Shelter Dog Should Know’ (AKA Dog training 101) class as well as the monthly Green Dot, Dog Walking classes for junior, adult and family volunteers. She joined DogCentric Training as an associate from 2015-2017 and now provides private training and puppy socialization and manners classes. In an ongoing quest to expand her knowledge of training skills and dog behavior, she is a regular attendee of lectures and workshops. She completed Sue Sternberg’s Instructor Training Course (ITC) at the Rondout Valley Animals for Adoption facility in Accord, NY in the summer of 2015 and Suzanne Clothier’s ITC program in 2016

Frequently asked questions about dog training

How much does dog training cost?

Dog training costs vary by type and location. Group classes typically run $50–$200 for a multi-week session. Private sessions range from $50–$150 per hour. Board and train programs can cost $500–$2,500+ per week depending on the trainer and length of program.

What dog training methods are most effective?

Positive reinforcement is widely considered the most effective and humane dog training method. It rewards desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones. Look for trainers certified by organizations like CCPDT, IAABC, or Karen Pryor Academy.

How long does dog training take?

Basic obedience typically takes 4–8 weeks of consistent training. Behavior modification for issues like aggression or separation anxiety may take 3–6 months. Every dog learns at their own pace — consistency and practice between sessions are key.

What certifications should a dog trainer have?

Look for trainers certified by CCPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer), IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), or the Karen Pryor Academy. These certifications require demonstrated knowledge and adherence to humane training standards.
