Wanaque, NJMary Jean Alsina
Mary Jean Alsina, Owner and Head Trainer of The Canine Cure, LLC has worked with dogs for over 12 years. I have taught many owners how to fully enjoy their relationships with their dogs and how to be more fulfilled as dog owners. I am a CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) and I did my main studies at The Academy for Dog Trainers in San Francisco, under the well-known trainer/author Jean Donaldson. There, I learned the ins and outs of dog behavior and behavior modification. I'm devoted to continuing education and in spite of my experience, I continue my education by attending many seminars, workshops, and conferences. I have worked at various animal shelters and continue to attend seminars and workshops around the country. I was a regular Dog Training Columnist for Examiner.com and Barks From The Guild. I also was a public school teacher for many years. Having 2 graduate degrees in Education has been a great asset as I understand how people truly learn, as well as dogs, and can patiently guide you to learn how to work with your dog to the best of your ability. Many times dog trainers seem to be the only one the dog will behave for. I will show you that is simply not true. You CAN get your dog to do what you want. My teaching experience also allows me to specialize in training for the whole family. It is so helpful to have everyone in the home on board for the training of the dog. This sets your dog up for a higher and faster rate of success. I strongly feel that dogs learn best when in a relaxed, positive environment. Using fear and scaring a dog in an attempt to get him to learn can be quite harmful, and is not effective in the long run, as it can cause other long-term fear and aggression problems. Dogs do not learn well with constant corrections. When trained this way, they never learn what IS expected of them. I teach your dog what they should do, not simply what you don't want them to do. You AND your dog will be much happier this way. Choosing a trainer with an EDUCATION in dog behavior is quite important because anyone can say that they are "good with dogs" because they had dogs all their life. That does not mean that they understand the intricacies of how dogs learn and

Frequently asked questions about dog training
How much does dog training cost?
Dog training costs vary by type and location. Group classes typically run $50–$200 for a multi-week session. Private sessions range from $50–$150 per hour. Board and train programs can cost $500–$2,500+ per week depending on the trainer and length of program.
What dog training methods are most effective?
Positive reinforcement is widely considered the most effective and humane dog training method. It rewards desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones. Look for trainers certified by organizations like CCPDT, IAABC, or Karen Pryor Academy.
How long does dog training take?
Basic obedience typically takes 4–8 weeks of consistent training. Behavior modification for issues like aggression or separation anxiety may take 3–6 months. Every dog learns at their own pace — consistency and practice between sessions are key.
What certifications should a dog trainer have?
Look for trainers certified by CCPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer), IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), or the Karen Pryor Academy. These certifications require demonstrated knowledge and adherence to humane training standards.
